Emily’s yoga practice started 16 years ago in her living room with a Rodney Yee video. Immediately, she loved the way her body felt after doing yoga, but it was only after she started practicing at SHAKTI 3 yrs. ago that her passion really began to blossom. For her, Baptiste yoga at SHAKTI was the perfect balance of the physical practice (cardio, strengthening and stretching) and the spiritual practice. The more yoga she did, the more she wanted to learn, which lead her to teacher training.


In the Fall of 2013, Emily completed SHAKTI’s 200 Hr. Teacher Training program, and then continued on with SHAKTI’s Teacher Mentorship Program under Lisa Black, Zak Endicott and Nicole Tsong. She has learned from many teachers over the years, including Jason Crandell, Rolf Gates, & Tiffany Cruikshank. She considers herself a student of yoga, first and foremost, and loves to gain insight from visiting teachers.
In Emily’s class you will have the opportunity to turn off the external stimuli so that you can really listen to your body’s needs and observe your thought patterns. You can expect to find a balance of rigorous poses, as well as an opportunity to slow down and breathe. And since she is enthusiastic about arm balances and inversions, you will probably get the opportunity to play a bit too.


She is inspired by her teachers and her students, who show dedication and perseverance every time they show up on their mat, completely open to possibilities.

Lisa is a nationally recognized Senior Certified Master Baptiste yoga instructor who brings over 20 years of diverse teaching and training experience to all of her work. She has been recognized by Yoga Journal Magazine as one of the “Next Generation’s talented yoga teachers in the country.” She has been assisting and teaching with Baron Baptiste since 2002 as well as presenting at international yoga conferences.


Lisa Black is the founder and creative and innovative force behind SHAKTI Vinyasa Yoga studios. With three studios in the Seattle area, Lisa has brought her powerful energy, expertise, and passion to teaching Power Vinyasa Yoga to thousands of people over the past decade. She was the pioneer and leader behind first bringing Baron Baptiste and Baptiste Yoga to the Seattle area in 2002. Lisa passionately shares the light that shines so brightly in her through this practice, her teachings, and her life.


With Lisa’s unique interactive style and powerful 'hands on' assists, Lisa has trained hundreds of yoga teachers and has been a catalyst in shaping the local yoga culture in Seattle. Her presence as a respected leader in the yoga community has provided a level of quality and integrity that continues to 'flow' back to each and every student. Her teaching ethics help maintain a strong and heartfelt level of keeping the true essence of this practice alive. Lisa teaches with love, humor, and intelligence. Her challenging and playful method of teaching empowers each person to discover their own potential in their practice and their lives.


Lisa lives in Seattle with her two children and is the creative force behind her three yoga studios. Through teaching daily classes, workshops, retreats, teacher trainings, conferences, and community events, she continues to touch and inspire thousands of people.

Mariko Johnston

Mariko took her first yoga class in 2006 and was immediately drawn to the physicality of the practice. Though she did practice sporadically over the years, she spent the majority of her time in the gym training clients and herself. That all changed in the summer of 2013. Recovering from an injury, Mariko came to SHAKTI looking for something therapeutic and physically challenging. By the end of her first class she knew she had found what she was looking for...plus a whole lot more. She felt like she had found her home on the mat. She began practicing regularly and the physical practice soon became a spiritual practice. As she learned to deepen the mind-body connection, Mariko discovered the power of soulfulness, mindfulness and living in the present.


Mariko is inspired by helping others, learning from others and creating community through the common language of yoga. She loves nothing more than witnessing the evolution of the human spirit once it is discovered and nurtured. She teaches in the hope of sharing the transformative practice of yoga with everyone. She combines her experience and expertise with training, movement and anatomy to create a challenging and safe environment for students to explore their edge. She often encourages her students to surpass their own expectations. Her classes are designed to challenge and strengthen both body and mind.


Mariko completed her 200-hour teacher training at Shakti in 2014 and went on to complete Shakti's Teacher Mentorship Program working with Zak Endicott and Nicole Tsong. She has attended workshops and classes with Bryan Kest, Tiffany Cruikshank, Amy Ippoliti and Annie Carpenter. Mariko is also a certified personal trainer with specializations in corrective exercise and performance enhancement.

Created in 2003 by Lisa Black as her unique signature style, SHAKTI is a dynamic, fluid, creative vinyasa yoga sequence that will challenge your mind and body and leave you feeling free and uplifted. Classes are based around the central theme of “wave-like fluidity" and multi-directional sequencing. We will move on our mats facing the front, the back, and both sides of the room using this circular based sun salutation, or “mandala namaskara” influenced by Shiva Rea, as the main structure. Within this dynamic flow, we explore creative variations of powerful standing postures, arm balances, twists, back bends, and hip openers. You will "surf your edge" as we support each other in learning playful inversions that leave you empowered! Be prepared to sweat, have fun, and explore your yoga practice in a new way. This class is appropriate for anyone with at least six months or more of steady vinyasa yoga practice and an open, willing mind. The yoga studio is heated to a comfortable, warm 90-92 degrees with humidity.
